What’s a good marketing budget for farms and food businesses?
We’ll help you determine the strategy and tactics that will make the best use of your budget.
The following rough ranges will depend on your sales goals (and how aggressively you want to work towards them); how much you do in-house vs. outsource; and how many marketing tactics you already have in place.
The low end of each range does not include website costs or branding (see headings below) but does include advertising.
If your focus is local, consider a range of $8,000 - 30,000+ to get set up, and then $650 - 4,800+/month after that.
If your focus is statewide, consider a range of $8,000 - 30,000+ to get set up, and then $1,400 - 4,800+/month after that.
If your focus is larger than statewide, it’ll depend on the specifics of your business. Prices for some tactics, like email marketing, won’t change much with geographic coverage. Others, like advertising, will increase significantly if you really want to saturate multiple states.
Consider that marketing to local customers typically has a wildly higher return on investment than marketing to a national audience. If you haven’t yet saturated your local market, it may be worth starting there. (If you haven’t done professional advertising yet, chances are there’s more room to grow locally, even if you feel like everyone already knows you!)
If you’re marketing distinct offerings — think u-pick orchard + cidery, grass-fed beef + agritourism, or farm stand + farm stays — it’s likely that the necessary budget will increase. It will depend on how distinct the target audiences are and whether some tactics will overlap between audiences or whether you’ll actually need two of everything.

Do I need to make a longterm commitment?
We can work together one project at a time, or Grapevine can support you with comprehensive ongoing marketing. In either case, you pay as you go, and there’s no longterm commitment needed.
Does it matter what website or sales platform I use?
We’re happy to work with farms and food businesses on any platform. We have clients using Barn2Door, CSAWare, Farmigo, GrownBy, Local Food Marketplace, Local Line, Shopify, Square, Squarespace, and Wordpress.
We can help with your marketing regardless of whether we built your website. The only caveat is that you’ll need a strong website in order for other marketing tactics to succeed. We can offer suggestions for updates if needed.
Can I use the prices below for a grant application?
Absolutely! Just keep in mind that some budgets may increase by ~5-10% by the time your grant is awarded. We also suggest starting with a call to gain a more accurate idea of the cost for your specific needs.

Advertising
An ad is only as strong as its destination, so if we’re not building your website, we’ll review it together and discuss suitability for advertising. We can work together to tweak your home page to perform as a strong landing page, make other website adjustments if needed, or give you guidance to make the changes on your own or with your web company.
Meta Ads
When set up correctly, we’ve found targeted social ads to be one of the highest-ROI tactics for reaching new local customers beyond your existing fan base.
Google Ads
Google Ads can be a great fit for farms and food businesses who are focused on regional shipping, as well as businesses that have already invested in SEO and saturated their local audience with Meta ads. Google often offers free credits (e.g., spend $1,000, get $500) — ask us about their current deal.
Pricing for Advertising
Budget ranges below do not include website updates (may or may not be needed). Monthly budget depends on your audience size. We can recommend a budget to fit your audience size, or an audience size to fit your budget!
Keep in mind you’re likely to see much higher ROI with your local or in-state audience, and if you haven’t done professional advertising yet, chances are you have room to grow there first before expanding to multiple states.
Meta ads (starts at $2,400 + monthly fees): We’ll configure the campaign based on our proven system for farms and food businesses that sell direct to consumer. $2,400 one-time setup for 1st campaign. Monthly fees (including ad spend) range from $650-900/mo (local audience) to $1,100+ (statewide audience), and above for an audience of more than one state. Larger ad spend budgets may require developing an ad plan first.
Google ads (starts at $2,900 + monthly fees): We’ll configure your campaign to avoid Google’s automated traps and achieve the best ROI possible, then manage ongoing optimizations and share metrics with you. Campaign setup is $2,900 - 4,200+, based on needs, number of campaigns, and campaign specs. Monthly fees (including ad spend) range from $750 - 1,400+/month per campaign, depending on objectives and region size (targeting more than one state will likely be > $1,400).
Coaching ($6,800 per platform): If you have time to DIY and a knack for learning technical skills, we’ll teach you our proven system. Budget includes turnkey setup.

Why invest in email automations?
You probably already know that email newsletters are an essential ingredient to driving sales. Automations take those results a step further. The two E-com packages go with websites built in Shopify, Square, and Grazecart, and are not a fit for standalone storefront platforms (the first package works great for those though!).
Starter Email Package ($1,400): We’ll configure your account according to best practices, design a template, and show you how to send newsletters.
Starter Email/SMS Package for E-com ($3,900): Includes everything above, plus a welcome series, multistep abandoned cart, and setup for SMS text message marketing. Can be discounted if you’d prefer to write the welcome series.
Complete Email/SMS Package for E-com ($6,400): Includes everything above, plus additional advanced automations to cultivate sales.
Custom Packages: The packages above are based on a pre-determined set of automations. We’re also happy to develop a custom package based on your needs.
Add email @ your domain ($650): Comply with Google rules — no more using a gmail or generic address to communicate with customers. We’ll set up email @ yourdomain.com, including DKIM & DMARC. Ongoing fee for $7/mo per address ($9.20 CAD) is payable directly to Google.

Email Platforms
Klaviyo is our top choice for Shopify websites. Mailchimp is a great fit if you’re using Local Food Marketplace, Barn2Door, or Squarespace. Squarespace’s built-in email marketing program can also be a fit if your site is in Squarespace. Drip is the only automation tool for Grazecart, although you can also use Mailchimp if you don’t want e-commerce automations.
The prices shown for our packages apply to these standard platforms, but we’re happy to work in a different email platform if you already have a favorite.

If you already have a website and you have the time to devote to DIY, we can start with a simple audit and coaching session. You can also hand it off to us to handle turnkey!

SEO is a spectrum and there’s a wide range of possibilities, from doing the basics to going all-out. A typical range is $3,200 - 14,000+ depending on your needs.

Our team of experts is just an email away! A typical budget per request is $78 - 1200+, depending on needs. $624 downpayment to begin; will be applied to initial request(s).

While we specialize at taking marketing work off your plate, we’re happy to use our expertise to teach farms and food businesses who have the time and energy to take on this work in-house!
